Just nineteen minutes away from our apartments near Fort Meade is an eclectic destination filled with enticing restaurants, one-of-a-kind-shops, and fascinating cultural attractions.
We’re talking about Old Ellicott City, and it welcomes thousands of visitors every year.
Destinations not to be missed include:
Called the Best of Howard County, the Antique Depot is a must-stop for vintage and antique finds. Seventy dealers feature an ever-changing selection, making each visit a one-of-a-kind treasure hunt. Owner Dave Robertson loves to collect. He enjoys sharing his passion with others and helping everyone find the perfect pieces for their homes. The shop takes everyone back in time as it’s located inside the former Dorsey Livery Stable, built in 1873. The building turned into a hardware store in 1924 before becoming the Antique Depot 65 years later.
Manor Hill Tavern
The Manor Hill Tavern occupies historic Taylor’s Row. Constructed in the mid-nineteenth century, the buildings originally served the area’s livery trade. Both the restaurant’s bar and dining room feature the original beams, barn doors, and exposed stone walls. A newly painted mural pays tribute to Ellicott City’s artistic community. In the kitchen, the chefs use fresh ingredients, including herbs and vegetables from the tavern’s farm. Sandwiches include Little Havana, fried green tomatoes, and barbecue brisket mega melts.
Ellicott City Firehouse Museum
Step into the Ellicott City Firehouse Museum to discover the challenges firefighters faced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Volunteers constructed the firehouse in 1889 for $500. They designed the building to house the hand-drawn and horse-drawn fire equipment. Today, the firehouse features displays with old photographs, model toys, and a wide range of fire apparatuses.
